Directions
Begin by heating the olive oil over medium heat in a large saucepan. Always make sure your saucepan is big enough. The meatballs require space to simmer in the sauce without sticking to each other.
Add the chopped onion, sweating for about 5 minutes until soft and translucent. Allowing the onion to sweat provides a base of flavors that enhances the overall taste.
Stir in the minced garlic, cooking for about 1 minute until fragrant.
Pour in the crushed tomatoes, ensuring to stir well to incorporate the onions and garlic. At this point, gauge your heat. We want everything to simmer and not boil. Lower the heat if necessary.
Stir in the water. This will dilute the tomato sauce. The consistency should be just right not too thick nor too watery.
Season with salt and pepper according to your preference. Add oregano for added depth of flavor.
Let the sauce simmer for 15 minutes. This will enable the flavors to meld together effectively.
Next, add the chopped basil leaves and optional sugar. The sugar helps cut the acidity of the tomatoes and provides a nice balance.
Gently drop your precooked meatballs into the sauce. Let them simmer in there for about 10 minutes. The sauce will imbibe the meat with delightful flavors while getting infused with meat essence itself.
Your Simply Delicious Meatball Sauce is now ready! Serve it hot over pasta or with bread on the side.
