Directions

120 min.
1. Step

Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour three 9-inch round cake pans.

2. Step

In a medium-sized bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder and salt. Set aside.

3. Step

In a large mixing bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.

4. Step

Beat in the eggs, one at a time, followed by the vanilla extract.

5. Step

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, alternating with the milk. Begin and end with the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined.

6. Step

Divide batter equally into three bowls and tint each bowl with a different food coloring (pink, purple, and blue).

7. Step

Pour colored batters into the prepared cake pans.

8. Step

Bake for about 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

9. Step

Remove the cakes from the oven and let them cool in the pans for 10 minutes. Then, transfer them onto wire racks to cool completely.

10. Step

In a large mixing bowl, cream the softened butter until fluffy.

11. Step

Gradually add the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla, beating until smooth and well combined.

12. Step

Divide the butter frosting into separate bowls and tint each bowl with the desired food coloring (pink, purple, and blue).

13. Step

Place one cake layer on a serving plate. Spread a layer of the colored buttercream frosting on top.

14. Step

Stack the second cake layer on top and repeat with the frosting. Finish by adding the final cake layer.

15. Step

Use the remaining frosting to cover the sides and top of the cake, until it's evenly coated.

16. Step

Decorate the cake with edible gold or silver stars, the unicorn horn, and ears. Sprinkle rainbow sprinkles on top for an extra touch of magic.

17. Step

Allow the cake to chill for 30 minutes before serving.
