Ginger lemon syrup for tea for colds

This recipe for ginger and lemon syrup is particularly close to my heart. I've made it countless times during the cold season as it's perfect for warding off colds and boosting the immune system. I also love the fresh and invigorating taste of ginger and lemon. The syrup is easy to prepare and can be used pure, infused with warm water or in tea.

Directions

1. Step

To make ginger lemon syrup, start by peeling the ginger and cutting it into thin slices. I have found that a kitchen grater is often the most efficient method if you want the ginger to be as fine as possible.

2. Step

Wash the lemons thoroughly and grate the zest from two lemons. Then squeeze all four lemons. Use a citrus juicer for grating and squeezing to get as much juice as possible.

3. Step

Place the ginger in a large pan with the water, sugar, lemon juice and lemon zest.

4. Step

Now bring everything to the boil and simmer over a medium heat for about 30 minutes. Make sure that the pot doesn't boil over - I've had a few messes here and there!

5. Step

Once the syrup has boiled, strain it through a fine sieve into a bowl. You can squeeze the ginger well to get all the delicious syrup.

6. Step

Pour the ginger lemon syrup into sterilized glass bottles while still hot and seal immediately. By the way, if you're wondering whether the bottles need to be sterilized - yes, they definitely do, so that the syrup keeps longer!
